What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s first national scheme that directly provides funds to individuals with a disability. It is a comprehensive system that uses a lifetime approach to enable people to live a quality life and get involved in their community and workplace.

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Through NDIS, the government supports these people who might have intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive or psychological disabilities.

The NDIS gives participants the ability to choose and control the supports they use. If you are an NDIS participant, Help Finder can provide you with further support and care you want. There’s an array of disability care services that you can choose from:

Supports funded by NDIS

Every person with a disability has different needs. The NDIS provides funding to participants based on these individual needs so that they can meet their goals and live a more comfortable life. The scheme will fund eligible NDIS participants for supports and services that:

  • Are reasonable and necessary – something that is fair and a person needs
  • Are related to participant’s disability
  • Represent value for money
  • Are likely to be effective and beneficial to the participant
  • Works well with any help or support the participant gets from other people or places, like family and friends

Remember that the NDIS doesn’t pay for day-to-day living costs, rent or groceries for instance. You can find all details on supports and services that are or aren’t funded by the scheme here

As an NDIS participant, you have the choice and control over how you use funds for supports and services you need. The main goal of NDIS is to help people get the care they need so their daily life, skills and independence improve over time.
